چکیده

Levels of progesterone were determined by competitive protein-binding techniques and oestrogens by radio-ligand binding techniques in the uterine and peripheral plasma of parturient ewes. Uterine progesterone levels began a continuous decline 4 to 5 days ante partum whereas jugular levels only declined 1 or 2 days ante partum. Peripheral plasma progesterone levels were significantly elevated in

The Mechanism by which Foetal Cortisol Controls the Onset of Parturition in the Sheep

The sheep is one of the few species in which there is good evidence that the foetus is involved in determining the length of pregnancy. Parturition in the sheep is prevented by foetal hypophysectomy (Liggins etal., 1967; Comline etal., 1970; Bosc, 1972) or adrenalectomy (Drost & Holm, 1968), and can be induced prematurely by intrafoetal administration of ACTH* or glucocorticoid (Liggins et al.,...

Effect of Relaxin on Parturition in Ruminants

The biology of relaxin differs in many respects between ruminants and nonruminants. Immunoreactive blood concentration of circulating relaxin is much less in ruminant (cattle and sheep) than in nonruminant (pigs) farm animals. The ovaries of the pig produce abundant quantities of the hormone in late pregnancy, whereas tissue sources of relaxin are not clearly defined in sheep and cattle. Relaxi...

Plasma steroids , prolactin and placental lactogen

Progesterone, total oestrogens (mainly conjugated and unconjugated oestrone), prolactin and placental lactogen have been determined during late pregnancy in the peripheral plasma of intact or hypophysectomized ewes after destruction of the foetal pituitary. During the prolongation of gestation due to the removal of the foetal hypophysis, progesterone and placental lactogen remained at a high le...

Background: Hirsutism is a common clinical problem with different etiologic factors. Hence, clinical and laboratory studies are necessary to find these factors. Objectives: To determine the etiologic factors of hirsutism with clinical and paraclinical studies including TSH, DHEA-S, LH/FSH, testosterone, prolactin, 17-OH progesterone and sonography of ovary. Patients and Methods: This cross sect...

Altered fetal pituitary-adrenal function in the ovine fetus treated with RU486 and meloxicam, an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthase-II.

Term and preterm labor are associated with increased fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activation and synthesis of prostaglandins (PGs) generated through the increased expression of prostaglandin H synthase-II (PGHS-II) in the placenta. Inhibition of PGHS-II has been advocated as a means of producing uterine tocolysis, but the effects of such treatment on fetal endocrine functions have...
